I don’t know about you, but I’ve been poring over every bit of information that I can get my hands on regarding the EIGHTEENTH Sims 4 expansion pack: Businesses and Hobbies, desperate to learn about all the different business types.
While details are incredibly light on the ground, we have managed to piece together quite a bit regarding the actual operation and variety of business types within the expansion, and that’s down to the fact that they’re actually defined in a really clever way: in The Sims 4: Businesses and Hobbies Expansion, once you’ve defined the business space you then define the activities that can be completed in the location.
That means, put simply, that you can retail almost anything by using the ‘Browse and Buy Items’ Business Activity, which actually – thankfully – massively trims down this list.
Anyway, enough dilly-dallying. Here are all the business types that we know about in the upcoming Businesses and Hobbies Expansion Pack – and we’re sure that more will be revealed in the February 18th Gameplay footage, and the as-of-yet ‘undetailed’ event on the 25th.
- Retail. Through the ‘Browse and Buy Items’ activity you can basically sell anything, from trash to treasure to Grilled Cheese.
- Some sort of odd Grilled Cheese situation. Yeah, there’s actually an activity called ‘All Things Grilled Cheese’ which is sure-fire bait for a certain type of Sim, although deliciously vague.
- Bar / Lounge / Concert Hall / Performance space. Through the ‘Listen to Music’ activity, you could set up any sort of performing space business types for music and ergo, any sort of decor you like that surrounds that concept. On that note…
- Comedy Club, Performance Hall. There’s a Business Activity called ‘Tell Jokes’, I can only hope that there’s one for ‘Perform Beat Poetry’ too.
- Repair Hub / Maintenance Space. Through the ‘Fix Objects’ activity, you can create a community repair hub, or create a business revolving around repairing broken objects.
- Baking- or Sweet-making (and likely cooking-) courses. Through the Make Treats activity, you can clearly train others to make sweets and treats, perfect for those who have mastered the cooking skills and maybe even already run a bakery or sweet-shop.
- Studying/Night-School Hall. Through the ‘Attend Classes and Lectures’, as seen in the trailer, there’s no reason why you couldn’t mentor on any given skill or subject.
- Some sort of boxing/fighting situation – a boxing hall? We’re not too sure on this one, but there’s an icon showing what looks like a boxing glove hitting something.
Critically, and back outside of the list format, we know that because of the fact that you can charge per hour, or charge a flat fee for entry, gyms and dance halls are very viable business strategies. Well, that and that we actually saw a gym in the recent trailer, alongside an Art and Confectionary store and… of course, the Pottery, Teaching and Tattooing spaces. There’s also a large statue included as an early-purchase reward, which possibly alludes to larger sculpture work.
Finally though, we also know that Pet Cafes, Spas, Laundromats, Bowling Alleys, Arcades and more are coming, because we’ve had our first peek at some of the Expansion/Stuff crossover content that unlocks when you have multiple packs. Here’s the skinny on that, below:
– Cats and Dogs Expansion Pack: Sims who love and adore their four legged friends can open pet cafés.
– Get Together Expansion Pack: Sims who are down to dance until the sun rises can create dance clubs and Sims who game until the wee hours of the morning can open arcades for like minded gamers.
– City Living Expansion Pack – Sing your heart out in your favorite city at your very own karaoke bar fitted out with your favorite Simlish tunes.
– Get Famous Expansion Pack – Did someone say paparazzi? Open an acting school where you teach celebrities how to play the part!
– Spa Day Game Pack – Fancy a massage, facial or meditative yoga retreat? Say namaste to all the Sims who choose to relax with you at your spa!
– Laundry Day Stuff Pack – Scrub a dub dub in your very own tub! Collect Simoleons as Sims wash their clothes at your laundromat!
– Bowling Night Stuff Pack – Sims who are competitive can open their very own bowling alleys. Get a strike or a spare on a fun night out with friends.
We’ll return to update this post as we learn more details on different business types, but for now… this is incredibly exciting and perhaps the biggest expansion to date.

Dann's been playing Maxis' Sim games since their Step-Sister brought around SimCity 2000 on their SNES. Since then they've not only been an avid fan of everything Sims (and The Sims), but sold them, modded them and is now... running a site about them!
